Dear Hema,

Thanks for asking to me give you some feedback on your blog. I’ve spent an interesting hour or so on your site, checking through your archives.

Okay, first up, I’d say your choice of blog name was a great marketing move. Anything that has Bollywood in a url is going to make progress.

And unlike the slight cringe factor that accompanied Bollywood and Tollywood in the late 70s and early 80s, it is now without doubt one of the most recognizable brand names in the world, up there with Coke and IBM.

From the point of view of a journalist with layout and production experience on magazines as well as newspapers, I’d say there is an interesting meld of many gimmicks, slide-in images, links, etc.

But if I were to try and pinpoint one thing that had the X-Factor, I’d be scratching my head for a few seconds. There are 70 million blogs out there, according to Technorati – and if a blog is to succeed editorially, it must have at least one X-Factor, one great element that people remember.

Because Bollywood has international appeal (university students in Melbourne know who Shah Rukh Khan is) you have a great platform. Use it. Post well, post often. Post snippets, post opinions, post news, post titbits.

It’s great to see reviews, and you do them rather well, but if you really want to attract readers who keep coming back to your site, then you have to post something every day. People who come back to your site and see no updates will not return. That’s the harsh truth of blogging.

From a design point of view, there are a lot of typefaces and many colours. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but pick what works best and stick with fewer colours maybe. This is not a huge issue, but it’s all a matter of making an editorial call and experimenting as you go. Evolve, but don’t make it a mish-mash of fonts and colours. It’s not Holi! Refinement is the new black, Hema!

There are a couple of things that had me baffled. The Shakira video clip can be justified on a Bollywood blog by virtue of her recent visit to India, but Maria Sharapova has little real relevance. The other thing is that the two shots of her are probably the biggest images on your page. Er, no. I’d give this a thumbs-down. No tennis players, unless they’re doing guest appearances in a Hindi flick. And you don’t want your best / biggest image to be down the bottom of your page.

Editorially, I would also say take care of the little subtleties. It does not bode well to spell Amitabh without the `h’ (December 16) or to mis-spell `received’ (December 13).

You asked for my feedback and this is my honest opinion. It’s not criticism, it’s advice. I think you have a potentially terrific blog and it’s now up to you to bring it to the boil and to keep it simmerng. But I’m always available for help and advice – just keep me informed of your progress and you will keep improving, I know. I’ll always be there to help and to guide you.

But remember the main elements of successful blogging – be credible, be accurate, be prompt, and post every day, even if it’s just a few sentences.

Good luck with everything. I wish you great success.

Sincerely

David McMahon
